Bleeding Gums: Causes, Prevention, and Treatment

Bleeding gums (gum disease) can be alarming, but they’re often a sign that your oral health needs attention. If you’ve noticed blood when you brush or floss, don’t ignore it — addressing the issue early can prevent more serious problems down the road.

We are becoming increasingly aware of the link between gum disease and several serious health conditions such as diabetes, heart disease and even Alzheimer’s disease. So apart from the oral health benefits of treating gum disease, there are huge general health benefits as well.

  • Gingivitis: This is the early stage of gum disease caused by plaque buildup along the gumline. Redness, swelling, and bleeding are common signs.
  • Brushing Too Hard: Using a hard-bristle toothbrush or brushing too aggressively can irritate your gums. A soft brush is always better, the soft bristles bend into difficult spaces better than hard ones
  • Inconsistent Flossing: If you only floss occasionally, your gums can become sensitive and bleed. Toothbrushes can’t reach the spaces between your teeth, so if you’re not flossing, these areas are never being cleaned.
  • Vitamin Deficiencies: Lack of nutrients like iron, and vitamins B, C and K can contribute to gum problems.
  • Medications: Blood thinners and certain medications can make your gums more prone to bleeding.
  • Improve Your Oral Hygiene: Brush twice a day with a soft-bristle electric toothbrush and floss daily. Consider using an antiseptic mouthwash to reduce bacteria.
  • Keep regular preventive appointments with our hygienists: There are so many tricky nooks and crannies in our mouths it is impossible for someone to reach them all. So, we need the help of a dental hygienist to remove the bacteria from these difficult areas
  • Maintain a Healthy Diet: Eating foods rich in vitamins and minerals supports gum health.
  • Stay Hydrated: Drinking water helps wash away food particles and bacteria.
  • Regular Dental Checkups: Our dentists work alongside our hygienists making sure there a no filling with rough edges or poor anatomy which traps food or bacteria. Orthodontic treatments straighten teeth making them easier to clean
