Emergency Dental Extraction: What You Need to Know

If you’re facing the need for an emergency dental extraction, we understand this can be a stressful situation. Don’t worry, we’re here to help relieve your pain and keep you helathy.

An emergency extraction may be required if you’re experiencing:

  • Severe tooth pain that doesn’t respond to pain relief
  • A badly broken or fractured tooth
  • Extensive tooth decay or infection
  • Swelling or abscess near the affected tooth
  • An impacted wisdom tooth
  • Advanced gum disease compromising tooth stability

If you think you need an emergency extraction, follow these steps while waiting for your appointment:

  • Manage pain: Take over-the-counter pain relief like ibuprofen (if you can tolerate it) and apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek to reduce swelling.
  • Avoid certain foods: Stick to soft, cool foods and avoid anything very hot, cold, or hard that could irritate the area.
  • Keep the area clean: Rinse your mouth gently with warm salt water to minimize bacteria.

Our priority is to make sure you’re comfortable and well-cared for throughout the procedure. We’ll:

  • Completely numb the area with local anesthesia so you don’t feel pain during the extraction.
  • Carefully remove the affected tooth with minimal impact on surrounding tissues.
  • Provide you with detailed aftercare instructions to ensure a smooth recovery.

Proper aftercare helps you heal quickly and avoid complications:

  • Rest and avoid strenuous activity for the first 24 hours.
  • Control bleeding by gently biting on gauze as instructed.
  • Manage pain and swelling with medication and cold compresses.
  • Stick to soft foods and avoid using a straw, smoking, or spitting, which can disturb healing.
  • Maintain oral hygiene by brushing carefully around the area and rinsing with salt water.
