Emergency Dental Care After a Traumatic Accident
One of the most distressing thing which can happen is a dental accident, especially if it happens to a child. It is important to seek immediate care. Dental injuries can range from chipped or broken teeth to knocked-out teeth or damage to the jaw and surrounding tissues. Our team at Dental off Chapel is here to provide expert, compassionate care when you need it most.
What to Do in a Dental Emergency:
For a Knocked-Out Tooth:
- Retrieve the tooth by holding the crown (the top part) and avoid touching the root.
- Rinse the tooth gently with water if it’s dirty, but do not scrub or remove any attached tissue.
- Try to reinsert the tooth into its socket, if possible. If that’s not an option, store the tooth in a container of milk or a tooth preservation product, contact lens saline (not the steriliser) is a good alternative.
- Seek immediate dental care — time is critical for saving the tooth.
For a Chipped or Broken Tooth:
- Rinse your mouth with warm water to clean the area.
- Apply a cold compress to your face to reduce swelling.
- Save any broken pieces of the tooth and bring them with you to the dentist.
- Schedule an emergency appointment as soon as possible.
For Jaw or Soft Tissue Injuries:
- Apply gentle pressure with gauze or a clean cloth to stop any bleeding.
- Use a cold compress to minimize swelling.
- Seek emergency medical care if the injury is severe.
