Porcelain Veneers Give You the Smile You’ve Always Wished For
The reasons why porcelain veneers are the gold standard
- They look like teeth
Porcelain interacts with light the way enamel does, with depth, translucency, and subtle variation.
- They stay that way
Porcelain resists staining from coffee, wine, and tea more effectively than natural enamel. The shade you choose at the outset is the shade you keep, without constant maintenance.
- They last
High-quality porcelain veneers, properly placed and cared for, routinely last 10 to 20 years. Over that lifespan, the cost-per-year calculation tends to look a lot more reasonable than it does at first glance.
- They are precise
Unlike composite, which is built up freehand chair-side, porcelain veneers are crafted in a laboratory by a skilled ceramist working to exact digital specifications. The tolerances are tighter, and the results are more consistent.
The porcelain veneer process at Dental Off Chapel
Stage 1: A conversation
Your first appointment is a proper discussion to understand what’s bothering you, what you’re hoping to achieve, and what kind of result actually appeals to you.
We use Digital Smile Design software and high-resolution imaging to model a proposed result before anything is touched. You see your potential new smile on screen, in detail, and we refine it until the design reflects what you want.
Stage 2: Wearing your smile
Before any preparation happens, we build a physical mock-up of your proposed veneers and place them temporarily in your mouth. You can look at them in the mirror, smile at your phone camera, and for our camera, so we can take photos for you to see your potential new smile at home.
If something feels off, like the length, the width, or the way they look when you talk, we adjust the design before you commit to anything. This stage exists because we’ve learned that what looks right on a screen doesn’t always feel right in person, and we want to get it right before we start to ensure you will be delighted with the end result.
Stage 3: Preparation and temporaries
With the design locked in, we prepare your teeth with a minimal, precise reduction of the surface enamel. A digital 3D scan goes to our ceramist; temporary veneers go onto your teeth, which are done to mimic the final result. These temporaries act as placeholders that let you keep testing the design in daily life and flag anything worth refining before the final veneers are made.
Stage 4: The result
Your custom porcelain veneers return from the laboratory. We try each one in individually, checking the shade, contour, and fit before bonding them in place. A final session of adjustment and polishing brings everything together.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know what shade to choose?
This is genuinely one of the most important decisions in the process, and we don’t rush it. If you’re having veneers across multiple teeth, we guide you toward a shade that looks natural against your skin tone and complements the rest of your smile, not simply the whitest option available. If some natural teeth will remain visible, we’ll often recommend whitening those first so the whole smile sits in harmony.
What happens if a veneer chips or comes off?
Porcelain is durable, but it’s not indestructible. A veneer can chip if subjected to significant force, like biting into very hard foods or a knock to the mouth. In most cases, a chipped or displaced veneer can be repaired or replaced without affecting the surrounding teeth. If you grind your teeth, we’ll discuss a night guard as part of your treatment plan.
I'm worried about looking "done." Can veneers look completely natural?
Yes, and this is the whole point of the bespoke design process. The veneers we create are individually shaped and shaded. They’re designed to complement your specific facial features, not to conform to a cosmetic template that looks the same on everyone. The best veneers are the ones nobody notices.
Do I need veneers on all my teeth?
Not necessarily. Some patients want a full smile transformation across six, eight or ten teeth. Others want to address one or two specific concerns. We’ll recommend the number that achieves a balanced, natural result for your particular smile.
How long is recovery?
There’s no recovery in the traditional sense. Some patients experience mild sensitivity between the preparation and final placement appointments, while temporary veneers are in place. Once the final veneers are bonded, most people go straight back to normal life.
Why opt for Dental Off Chapel?
Prahran and South Yarra have no shortage of dental options. We’re not going to list our qualifications and hope that’s enough.
What we’ll say instead is this: we take cosmetic work seriously, because we know it matters to you. The time we spend in consultation is as much as you need, the important trial smile stage is something we won’t skip, the ceramist we trust with every set of veneers, are all the ways we make sure the result is one you’ll be genuinely glad you chose, ten years, and more, from now.
We’re also a practice where you can ask the awkward questions about whether this is really worth it, if something less expensive might serve you just as well, and what happens if you hate the result. We offer honest dentistry, careful work, and a smile you’ll love having.
